Why I Built My Own Golf Simulator Controller

When I started using a golf simulator, I quickly realized that the available control solutions just didn’t meet my needs. Here’s why I decided to build my own:

I Needed Full Mouse Control Most commercial controllers only offered basic button presses. I wanted the ability to move the mouse, click anywhere, and interact with every part of the simulator software—just like I could at the PC.

Physical Boxes Weren’t Durable I tried several hardware button boxes. They took a beating in my sim room—buttons broke, enclosures cracked, and after a few months, most stopped working reliably. I needed something more robust and less prone to physical failure.

Not Enough Precision When Aiming Aiming with simple buttons or dials was never precise enough. I wanted pixel-perfect control for shot setup, menu navigation, and fine adjustments.

Many Functions Not Supported Most controllers only handled a handful of functions—start, stop, next shot. I needed access to the full range of simulator features: practice modes, settings, camera angles, and more.

Cables on the Floor Wired solutions meant more clutter and tripping hazards. I wanted a wireless, clean setup—no more cables snaking across the floor.

Room Too Dark to See Labels My sim room lighting is often dim, and physical button labels were hard to see. I wanted a backlit, touch-friendly interface that was always visible.

Other Tablet Solutions Fell Short I tried iPad and tablet-based controllers, but most had: - Complicated setup processes - Inconsistent performance (lag, disconnects) - Bland, uninspired UIs - Missing features (still needed a keyboard for some actions) - No true “all-in-one” experience

I Wanted to Avoid Keyboard Interaction Entirely The biggest frustration: having to walk back to the keyboard during a round. I wanted a solution that let me stay in the hitting area, control everything from my tablet, and never break my practice rhythm.
